What has to be checked before an EV charger is installed?
Five things: what the charger requires, whether your switchboard has the space and protection for a dedicated circuit, how much electrical capacity your supply has left, the cable route from board to charger, and where the charger should be positioned for the vehicle.
Does an EV charger need a switchboard assessment?
Yes, in practice. A charger runs on its own protected circuit, and whether your existing board can take that circuit is the first thing that decides the installation. Sometimes the board is fine and sometimes it needs work first. The assessment tells you which before you commit.
Can EV charging be planned during a new home build?
Yes, and it is the most straightforward time to do it. Planning the charger position, cable route and board capacity while the frame is open can reduce avoidable retrofitting through a finished house later, even if the charger itself comes years afterwards.
Where can an EV charger be positioned?
Where the lead comfortably reaches the charge port of the parked vehicle, and where the unit is protected from weather and damage. Garage walls and carports are typical. The cable route back to the switchboard also shapes the sensible options, which is part of what we assess.
